Dealing With A Clogged Pipe

If you are dealing with a bad clog in your drain, it is important that you get it taken care of as quickly as possible. The longer that you wait to fix the clog the more entrenched the clog may become. There are a few different ways that your pipe can become clogged. Often it is because an object such as a plastic wrapper is put down the sink on accident, but often it is mineral buildup in the pipes. No matter what is the cause of your clog, you have a few different options to rid yourself of the clog. Here are a few different things that you can do to rid yourself of that pesky clog:

Drain Cleaners

One of the most effective ways to rid yourself of the clog is to pour a drain cleaner down the drain. These drain cleaners are designed to make your clog completely disappear, and they do this by being extremely basic. The drain cleaner will come into contact with the clog and accept all the free hydrogen atoms in the material. This makes it much easier for the clog to become less viscous and flow down the drain.

Pipe Auger

If you try the drain cleaners but none of them work very well, then it may be time for you to rent a pipe auger. This often involves a long cable that can be used to physically push the clog down the drain. Often these augers will have the ability to use a jet cleaner. So you can not only push physically on the clog, but you can also hook it up to a high-pressure hose and try to clean out the clog using high-pressure water. This is generally a great method to try after you have tried a drain cleaner.

Plumber

If you have tried the first two steps but have not been successful in ridding yourself of the clog, then you may want to consider talking with a plumber. The odds are that if you did not get rid of the clogged drain with a pipe cleaner and an auger, then you have major problems in your pipes. The plumber will be able to diagnose the problem by attaching a camera onto the end of a pipe snake and recording what is down your pipes. Once the cause of the clog is identified, be it a kinked pipe or even a collapsed pipe, the plumber will rid you of the problem.
